Inside an Immigrant Detention Center

In February of 2019, I travelled to San Antonio, Texas with 11 other students from Middlebury College. It was the second semester of my sophomore year and I had just declared a major in Latin American Studies. When the opportunity presented itself to go on a weeklong, student organized trip to an immigration detention center, I was on it. There, we would be working with RAICES, a non-profit that provides free and low cost legal help to people who have been detained by ICE. We met throughout the fall to get to know each other and to become familiar with the work we would be doing. Four months later we were finally--almost-- on our way.
